Bulk Carrier FEDRA runs aground in severe weather |

A 35000 ton Bulk Carrier FEDRA went aground in severe gale conditions off Europa Point last night. Yesterday evening Gibraltar Emergency Services were attempting to try and lift 31 crew members who were stranded on the ship to safety. According to sources, all members of crew were recovered with Spanish Helicopters helping in the rescue.
FEDRA is currently abandoned under the lighthouse according to witnesses.
Earlier in the day the Fedra had advised the Gibraltar Port that she was dragging anchor and two tugs the Warrier and Wellington provided assistance prior to the ship going aground in heavy seas and weather.
Gibraltar was last night affected by severe weather conditions with the Gibraltar Government Civil Contingency Committee sending out a Red Alert warning the general public that severe weather was expected to continue and possibly worsen during the next 24 hours.
?The general public are advised that it is preferable to remain indoors and to consider the necessity of going outdoors during this period.?
There has been considerable weather damage to structures and trees in various parts of Gibraltar, including to Gib V, Chilton Court and St Bernards Hospital, according to sources. The Government?s technical services and emergency services were working to render these safe, and repair damage.
The public is asked to co-operate with public and emergency services during these busy and difficult times. The Government condemns those who pelted police officers with eggs when responding to a call for assistance in Sortie House.
The severe gale force winds were expected to peak at around 9 pm last night with heavy rainfall expected during the night.
